Case study of high-precision industrial drilling platform model production
This project aims to create a 1:50 scale onshore oil drilling platform model for display and teaching purposes, with the goal of achieving a fidelity of over 90%. The model will focus on presenting the complex steel structure of the platform, the layout of heavy equipment, and the strong industrial atmosphere of field operations, achieving highly realistic visual effects through the integration of materials and processes.

1、 Material selection: Building a realistic industrial texture
The model selects multiple material combinations based on the characteristics of different functional parts to simulate real texture:
Main structure: Large frames such as the derrick, base, and main load-bearing beams are constructed using laser cut ABS sheets and profiles. ABS balances strength and ease of processing, accurately depicting the welding form and heaviness of large steel structures.
Equipment and mechanical components: Key equipment such as mud pumps, turntables, top drives, and blowout preventers use high-precision resin 3D printing to ensure accurate reproduction of complex shapes.
Detail components: A large number of repeated fine parts such as guardrails, stairs, pipes, etc. use metal etching sheets, and their extremely thin characteristics can perfectly reproduce the delicate steel structure on site. The power pipeline is simulated using copper wires and hoses of different diameters.
Ground foundation and site: The base is reinforced with multiple layers of wooden boards, and the surface is covered with gypsum and sculpted mud to mimic the mixed terrain of concrete flooring and compacted soil layers.
2、 Production process: precision construction and detail enhancement
The production process adopts a construction logic of "bottom-up, modular partitioning", emphasizing the accuracy of the structure and the richness of details.
Main body construction: Starting from the bottom base, refer to the drawings to assemble ABS beams and columns into a sturdy three-dimensional frame. All connections are bonded with model glue, and key load-bearing parts are drilled and embedded with metal piles for reinforcement to ensure overall stability.
Equipment installation and pipeline laying:
After finishing and polishing the printed large equipment, accurately install it in the designated position.
Based on the reference photos, use thin copper pipes and hoses to simulate hydraulic, fuel, and mud conveying pipelines, bend and fix them according to the actual direction, and create a complex but orderly visual sense.
Details added:
Manually paste etched guardrails on all platform edges and install hollow staircases for vertical structures.
Add a large number of printed small parts such as micro valves, instrument panels, and connectors, and install warning lights and overhead crane markers above the derrick.
Fake group and testing: Conduct multiple trial assemblies before final painting to check for structural interference and ensure that the equipment layout is reasonable and the derrick is vertical without errors.
3、 Painting and Aging: Restoring the heaviness and vicissitudes of fieldwork
Painting aging is the key to endowing the model with soul, using a comprehensive technique of "layered spraying, key stain washing, and dust accumulation".
Primer and base color: overall spraying of ash and soil to check for defects and unify the base color. In the main structure spraying, yellow or red lead primer is used as the anti rust primer layer, and the equipment is sprayed with color separation according to its function, such as dark gray for diesel engines and white for mud tanks.
Aging treatment:
Staining and seepage lines: Apply a deep brown stain solution to every weld, rivet, and corner, and wipe off excess surface areas after drying to highlight structural shadows and greasiness.
Dry sweeping and paint peeling: Use light gray and silver to dry sweep all edge protrusions, simulating the effect of metal wear and paint peeling. Key paint peeling treatment should be carried out on frequently operated parts such as pedals and valves.
Dust and stain manifestation: Diluted with natural soil particles, sprayed on the bottom of the platform, around the equipment, and on the surface under the pipeline, imitating the common accumulation of soil and dust on site. Use dark brown oil paint to create an oil leakage effect under the engine and at pipeline joints.
Final assembly and final adjustment: carry out final assembly after completing all aging. Install extremely fine warning sign stickers and coat the warning lights with transparent red/orange. Finally, spray a layer of semi gloss protective paint to achieve a uniform gloss and fix all aged layers.
