Oilfield Mining Diorama Model Production Case
Project Overview & Material Selection
This 1:150 scale diorama recreates an oilfield , featuring key operational zones such as drilling platforms, pumpjacks, and gathering stations. The primary material is 2-5mm ABS sheets, chosen for their balance of durability and fine detailing capability. Supplementary materials include:

Terrain base: High-density foam board (lightweight, easy to shape)
Miniature equipment: ABS rods/tubes (for derricks and structural elements)
Joints & bonding: ABS cement + acetone solvent (ensures seamless adhesion)
Core Construction Techniques
1. Terrain Sculpting
Satellite imagery was converted into CAD contour lines, guiding the laser-cutting of ABS into 20 layered elevation modules.
A "step-stacking" method was used for assembly, with gaps filled using an ABS-acetone putty, then sanded for smooth gradients.
2. Industrial Component Fabrication
Pumpjack Array: 0.8mm ABS laser-cut into miniature components, assembled via mortise-and-tenon joints. Copper wire was embedded in crank mechanisms for articulation.
Pipeline Network: 3mm ABS tubes were heat-bent to match real-world layouts, with joints fused using acetone-soaked ABS strips.
Storage Tanks: ABS cylinders were lathe-turned, topped with photo-etched safety railings for realism.
3. Dynamic Elements
A concealed micro-motor drives a conveyor belt in the gathering station.
Magnetic-controlled LEDs simulate nighttime drilling operations.
All wiring was routed through pre-milled channels in the ABS baseplate.
Artistic Finishing Process
1. Base Coating & Weathering
After a uniform gray primer, zone-specific coloring was applied:
Pumpjack Area: Matte desert yellow + brown wash for dust accumulation.
Equipment Zones: Industrial gray with silver dry-brushing to highlight wear.
Oil Stains: Translucent orange mixed with petroleum jelly for glossy residue effects.
2. Detail Enhancement
Pipeline Rust: Sponge-stippled iron oxide effects, with streaks following gravity flow patterns.
Mechanical Wear: Scratches were carved at stress points using a hobby knife, revealing metallic undercoats.
Ground Textures: Soldering iron impressions created tire tracks, filled with gypsum powder for loose soil simulation.
