Henghui Models: Crafting a Life-Like New Energy Solar Farm Sand Table

When a domestic new energy firm approached Henghui Models to build a solar farm sand table—aimed at showcasing their project to local communities and investors—our first goal was clear: to make the model feel like a “miniature version” of the real site, with 90%+   (reduction accuracy).

Step 1: Terrain Base – Laying the Foundation for Realism

We started with the terrain, since it’s the backbone of any landscape model. First, our team studied the client’s site photos and satellite maps—note every hill, flat area, and existing path. We cut a thick wooden board for the base (sturdy enough to hold later components) and covered it with high-density foam. Instead of relying on machines alone, our craftsmen used hand-carving tools to shape the foam: gentle slopes were sanded down with fine-grit sandpaper, while small depressions (for natural drainage areas) were hollowed out with precision knives.

To make the terrain feel “lived-in,” we mixed acrylic putty with a touch of earth-tone paint and spread it over the foam. This not only smoothed out rough edges but also added a subtle texture—like the unevenness of real soil. Once dry, we used a dry-brushing technique (dabbing light brown paint over darker base coats) to highlight the slopes, making the terrain’s contours visible at a glance. For grassy areas, we sprinkled green flock powder (mixed with clear glue) in patches—avoiding a “perfectly even” look, just like how grass grows in clumps in real fields.

Step 2: Component Making – Handcrafting Every Detail

The solar panels and battery station were the star components, and we focused on making them look authentic without overcomplicating. For the solar panels, we cut thin, flexible resin sheets (chosen because they mimic the matte finish of real panels) into small rectangles. Our painters used a fine-tip brush to add faint black grid lines—one by one—on each “panel,” just like the cells on real solar modules. We then glued them in neat rows on the terrain, leaving tiny gaps between rows (matching the client’s on-site layout).

For the battery storage building, we used thin plastic sheets (easy to shape yet durable) to cut out walls and a roof. We added small, pre-cut plastic “windows” and glued them in place, then painted the exterior with the client’s brand color—applying two thin coats to avoid drips. Inside, we placed a soft yellow LED strip (hidden under the roof) to simulate the warm glow of working equipment, but kept the wiring invisible from the outside.

Step 3: Finishing Touches – Making It Feel “Real”

The final steps were all about small details that boost 还原度 (reduction accuracy). We glued tiny wooden sticks (painted gray) as fence posts around the battery building—spacing them just like real fences. For the access road, we spread fine gray sand (mixed with glue) over a thin line of paint, creating a gravel texture that looks and even feels like real road material.

We then did a “distance check”: stepping back 3 meters (the typical viewing distance for such models) to ensure every part blended naturally. We touched up any uneven paint spots and adjusted a few solar panels that were slightly off-kilter. Finally, we sprayed the entire model with a clear protective coating—this not only prevents paint chipping but also gives a subtle matte finish, just like the real outdoor environment.

When the client saw the model, they said, “It looks exactly like the site we’re building—even the way the grass is patchy!” That’s the goal of Henghui Models: every craft step, every material choice, and every paint stroke is designed to turn a blueprint into something tangible, familiar, and real.
