Mining Diorama Model Production Case
I. Project Background & Design Preparation
This 1:100 scale mining diorama replicates an open-pit coal mine, emphasizing realistic terrain and operational details. The process began with drone aerial scans to capture site topography, followed by CAD contour mapping to highlight key zones: excavation faces, haul roads, and waste dumps. The design phase employed a modular approach, dividing the model into three core components: base terrain, pit structures, and machinery.

II. ABS Fabrication Techniques
Terrain Construction
Laser-cut 5mm ABS sheets into 20 layered contour frames, bonded with ABS solvent cement.
Slopes were shaped by heat-gun bending and hand-sanding edges for natural gradients.
Critical joints reinforced with ABS rods for structural integrity.
Infrastructure Detailing
Excavators: Hybrid construction—3D-printed bucket teeth with 2mm ABS plate bodies.
Conveyors: Rollers formed from rolled 0.5mm ABS, belt textures engraved with scribing tools.
Buildings: "Skin-over-core" method: 1mm ABS sheets laminated onto foam cores for lightweight rigidity.
III. Surface Finishing & Painting
Texture Development
Rock strata: Acrylic paste mixed with quartz sand, combed with steel brushes for stratified effects.
Slag piles: Crushed ABS scraps blended with PVA glue, dusted with coal powder for granularity.
Roadways: Fine-grit sand mixed with matte varnish for gravel realism.
Paint Layering
Primer: Gray surfacer spray for defect inspection.
Base tones: Gradated airbrushing (Vallejo Coal Black + German Grey).
Weathering: Sponge-stippled rust (Burnt Sienna), hand-painted streaks with detail brushes.
Decals: Waterslide transfers for corporate logos/safety markings.
IV. Scene Assembly & Hyper-Detailing
Safety fences: 0.3mm brass wire mesh, epoxy resin "puddles" in tire ruts.
Truck tire impressions: Silicone-molded from hot-glue negatives, cast in plaster.
Operational lighting: Concealed wiring powering micro-LED hazard lights.
Final coat: Matte varnish to unify sheen, static grass for sparse vegetation.
Outcome: This ABS-intensive build leveraged the material’s versatility to achieve 90%+ accuracy in geological formations and industrial equipment. Iterative photo-referencing ensured proportional fidelity.
